1. What is SSL? [ top ]

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a security technology that is commonly used to secure server to browser transactions. This generally includes the securing of any information passed by a browser (such as a customer's credit card number or password) to a webserver (such as an online store). SSL protects data submitted over the Internet from being intercepted and viewed by unintended recipients.

Whenever a browser connects to a webserver (website) over https:// - this signifies that the communication will be encrypted and secure. In order to get SSL for your website you first need an SSL Certificate. Your SSL Certificate is installed onto your webserver and allows you to access the security functionality of your webserver and ultimately let your customers know that your site is secure.

There are many different suppliers of SSL Certificates. A few are Thawte, Verisign, FreeSSL,

6. What if I do not want to pay much for an SSL Certificate? [ top ]

If you do not wish to pay for an SSL Certificare you could either generate a self signed certificate using your webserver or open source software or you could opt for a low cost development certificate from a site such as FreeSSL.com. As far as we are aware FreeSSL.com is currently the lowest cost SSL Provider that will issue fully functional 1 year certificates, ideal for testing of webservers and e-commerce enabled systems, prior to their commercial rollout. As FreeSSL.com FreeSSL Certificates only have a browser recognition of IE5.01 and above we would recommend that you investigate other SSL Certificates when you are ready to launch your tested system.

8. What is a Certification Authority (CA)? [ top ]

Not just anybody can issue trusted SSL Certificates. If they could then there would be no trust in SSL - and it could no longer be used commercially. Instead only Certification Authorities, or CAs as they are commonly known, can issue trusted SSL Certificates. CAs have generally invested in establishing the technology, support, legal and commercial infrastructures associated with providing SSL certificates. Even though CAs are essentially self-regulated, the nearest to a governing body is the WebTrust compliancy program operated by AICPA/CICA: "The WebTrust Seal of assurance for Certification Authorities symbolizes to potential relying parties that a qualified practitioner has evaluated the CA's business practices and controls to determine whether they are in conformity with the AICPA/CICA WebTrust for Certification Authorities Principles and Criteria." The majority of CAs comply to the WebTrust principles, however some do not have WebTrust compliance.

9. Why would I need SSL? [ top ]

If you plan to take credit cards online, or if your customers are submitting sensitive information via the web such as usernames, passwords, personal details, etc. then you should be using SSL to secure the data in transit. It is also expected by your customers that you will use SSL for e-commerce.
